Michael with his trophy for 2nd place in the NZ GP at Huntly

Michael has been lucky enough this season (2010/2011) to get to race in two cars. The # 9 car of  Moonshine Racing team in NZ and also for Brendon Fox in Australia also in a #9 car. Michael will travel to Australia in the weekends to compete in the Speedcar Super Series.

.

A huge thanks to Brendon,Neil and Mark for the many hours preparing the car and the long drive so Michael could race the following weekend.

18/10/10

Week 2 of the speedcar super series was at Charlton Raceway in Toowoomba. Things started out good for Michael. He arrived at Brisbane airport on Friday morning so had plenty of time to go through the car and was happy that things were all good and he was ready for the next night (race night).

After his hot laps didnt go so good ( miss fire). In Michael first heat  he started off on Grid 2 and after 10 laps he won it.

Heat 2 Michael started on grid 1 and lead for most of the race until he hit a hole in the track and Brown got under him, coming in 2nd place.

In the feature Michael started on grid 10. With 20 cars on the track Michael was in a good spot ( so he thought). The race had only just started when in the first lap another driver hit the wall and came back on the track and took out 6 cars,. unfortunately Michael was one of them and came out the worst.

Michael is back again next weekend at Archerfield speedway, Brisbane for round 3 of the series.

11/10/10

Michael had his 1st race for Brendon Fox at Maryborough Speedway Australia. Michael arrived at Brisbane airport on Friday morning  to find that his bags (race gear) were still at Auckland airport. Pacific Blue had forgotten to put them on the plane. After many phone calls and many hours his bags were sent to Harvey Bay airport on Saturday afternoon. Then it was a quick drive to the Maryborough track to get ready for this first time in the new car.

Michaels first race started great but then a car stopped in front of him and he rolled the car. With the help of his crew they got the car going and he was out again for his next heat.

Michael started on 4 in this heat and finished 1st . In the feature Michael started 17th out of 30 cars. After 30 laps Michael finished 5th, an awesome effort from him and his crew. Michael is back this weekend to race at Charlton Raceway.

22/05/10 - Michael's Australian Trip

With only a few days before the Victorian State Title Michael was phoned by Mark Cooper from Australia and asking to come drive for Brendon Fox in the 9NSW Spike/Esslinger speedcar.

Before Michael knew it he was on the plane to Australia with only three days to prepare himself for the big race. He landed in Sydney Friday morning and traveled with Brendon and the crew 7 hours to Wangaratta Speedway, “when I arrived at the track my first impression was that the track was like a tight little bullring” says Michael.

The race meeting started at 2pm (Australia time) but Michaels warm – ups where scheduled for 6pm, with 48 heat races in total on the programme the track was sure to change!

For Michael’s first heat he was out of grid position 5 and Michael Pickens out of grid 1, the race was very fast because of the shape of the track which meant passing was extremely difficult, finishing in 5th place.

The second heat he started in grid 4 and after a bit of tuning in the pits this gave him a bit more right rear bite, he was quickly leading the race by the back straight. Unfortunately the yellows came on which meant a complete re-start, Michael then fought hard for a close 2nd missing out on the top 8 shoot out by 1 point!

As the night progressed the temperature plummeted to a chilly -3 degrees, come feature time he was scheduled to start out of grid 9.

Finally at 10.30pm they lined up for the four wide solute before taking the green, Michael quickly moved into 5th position and maintained this position until mid race, when the leaders caught up to lap cars which caused the yellows to come on this resulted in Michael moving up positions. He took the green with about 10 laps to go, Michael was wheel to wheel with Australian Mark Brown for the lead. With only 5 laps to go Brown retired to the infield due to tyre wear, but by this stage Michael’s right rear tyre was wearing thin so he had to move to the bottom to cover his line, leaving the top open for 2 Australians to sneak past.

He finished the race in 3rd position, an awesome effort for his first time driving in Australia.

Thanks again to Brendon Fox and his team!
